The jumpy fish may look like a novelty act, but in a lawsuit aimed at stopping the Asian carp expedition towards Minnesota waters, they’re called “a threat.”

“Right now, they’re on our doorstep.”

Minnesota’s attorney general has filed a lawsuit, hoping for a court-imposed order that would do more to prevent the flying fish from moving out of Illinois rivers and into Lake Michigan, and ultimately Lake Superior:

“You can’t put a price tag on the Great Lakes.”

The Mississippi river basin is also a concern; a single Asian carp was found near Winona last year. Three years ago, they pulled one out of Pappin, near Lake City. They’ve not established themselves in Minnesota, but they could. And if they get here, the DNR says they’ll multiply quickly, taking food from all the other fisheries.

“They actually go through the water and feed on all the plankton, which is the base of the food chain. That’s what feeds the minnows and everything else.”

Senator Amy Klobuchar says that she’s taken her fight to stop the Asian carp invasion to the top of the political food chain:

“In December I wrote to the President, urging him to take quick action to prevent the spread of carp. Believe me, the President’s well aware of the views of Minnesota and Wisconsin and Michigan on this issue.”

It’s not a pretty picture: local leaders here want action sooner than later. They’re taking the battle to Federal courts and Capitol Hill:

“If you give a man an Asian carp, he’ll eat for a week; but if you teach a man to keep Asian carp out of the Great Lakes, he’ll be able to fish for a lifetime.”

미시시피강 유역 역시 걱정입니다. 작년 아시안 카프 한 마리가 위노나 지역에서 발견되었기 때문이죠. 3년 전 레이크 시티 근처 패핀에서 한 마리가 발견된 이후 미네소타에서는 아직 나타난 적이 없지만 언제든 나타날 수 있습니다. 한번 나타나면 빠르게 번식하여 다른 모든 어장으로부터 먹이를 닥치는 대로 먹어 치울 것으로 DNR은 보고 있습니다.

“실제 이들은 실제 물을 헤집고 다니며 먹이사슬의 근간이 되는 플랑크톤을 모조리 먹어 치우면서 역시 플랑크톤으로 연명하는 작은 물고기나 다른 것들의 씨를 말리는 셈입니다.”

에이미 클로부샤 상원의원은 이 아시안 카프의 유입 차단 노력에 대해 최고 통수권자의 관심을 촉구시켰다고 말합니다.

“12월 아시안 카프의 확산을 막는 조속한 조치를 취할 것을 촉구하는 서한을 대통령께 보냈습니다. 믿어 주세요. 대통령 역시 이 문제에 대한 미네소타, 위스콘신, 미시간 주의 입장을 잘 알고 있습니다.”

멋진 사진은 아닙니다. 이곳 지역 지도자들은 늦기 전에 조속한 행동이 취해지기를 기대하고 있습니다. 이들은 이 싸움을 연방 법원과 의사당으로 가지고 갈 태세입니다.

“성인 남성 한 명에게 아시안 카프를 주면, 일주일은 먹을 겁니다. 그렇지만, 아시안 카프를 오대호에 들이지 않는 방법을 알려 주면 평생 낚시를 할 수 있을 겁니다.”
