This was the moment panic broke out; people tried desperately to scale the walls leading out to the tunnel, crowded with thousands of festival-goers unable to move forward, or back. Some couldn’t escape the crush.

19 people died, most of them in this spot. More than 300 were injured.

“I feel terrible sadness -- I can still see the images in front of me. I haven’t been able to sleep since Saturday night.”

“It was meant to be a party celebrating joy and love, and it ended in disaster. I feel everything -- from sadness, anger, disappointment. I can’t really put it into words.”

Eleven of the victims came from Germany, and rest from countries as far away as China and Australia. Alongside the mourning, outrage and questions about whether this tragedy could have been prevented. Experts say they’d warned organizers and local officials that the festival site - an old goods train station in Duisburg with just one entrance -- was wholly unsuitable for Germany’s biggest mass event.

“I said it wouldn’t work. It’s far too built up - no open spaces, like in Berlin. Sadly, no one listened.”

State prosecutors have launched an investigation and have taken documents from the Duisburg City Hall.

“We have already voluntarily handed over our documents to an investigative authority. Please understand that I cannot say any more about this occurrence - for the protection of my own employees.”

Amidst a barrage of criticism from journalists, the mayor also added that there was a solid security plan in place, and advised waiting on the results of the investigation before rushing to find fault.

The festival organizers have announced that the Love Parade, which was launched more than 20 years ago in the name of peace, will now be discontinued - its name forever tarnished with the loss of 19 young lives.

희생자 중 11명은 독일인이었고 나머지는 중국과 호주와 같이 먼 곳에서 온 관광객도 있었습니다. 애도의 감정과 함께 분노, 그리고 이와 같은 참사를 막을 수 있지 않았을까 하는 의문이 제기되었습니다. 전문가들은 축제 장소가 출구가 하나밖에 없는 뒤스부르크의 오랜 화물 기차역이라 독일 최대의 인파가 몰리는 행사를 치르기에는 적합하지 않다고 조직위와 지역 당국에 경고했었다고 말합니다.

“장소가 적합하지 않을 거라고 말했습니다. 너무 밀집되어 있고, 베를린처럼 탁 트인 곳이 없었다고 말이죠. 그러나 아무도 듣지 않았습니다.”

주 검찰이 조사를 시작했고 뒤스부르크 시청으로부터 관련 문서를 넘겨 받았습니다.

“이미 자발적으로 관련 문서를 조사당국에 넘겼습니다. 저희 직원들을 보호하기 위해 이 사고에 대해 더 이상 언급할 게 없다는 점을 이해해 주십시오.”

언론의 집중 포화 속에 시장은 확실한 안전 계획이 있었다면서 섣불리 비난하기 전에 조사 결과를 기다려보자고 제안했습니다.

축제 조직위는 평화라는 이름으로 20년 넘게 진행되어 온 러브 퍼레이드가 19명의 희생이라는 영원한 오명을 남긴 채 이제 중단될 것이라고 발표했습니다.
