Argentinians live for the World Cup. Not only can it change people’s mood, but politicians speculate that the national team’s performance could influence the outcome of next year’s national elections.

World Cup gatherings are carefully planned:

“At work, we’ll have a TV set to watch the national team and all other important matches.”

“We’ll enjoy this to the full extent. I have faith that Argentina will be the winner.”

“Our friends will be together. Perhaps some of our girl friends will also watch, and will come with us. For sure, I’ll be with my friends.”

That Argentinians are extremely passionate about football is well known, but even though the national team gets all the attention, the rest of the matches will be closely followed. Renovations and upgrades have been made: mega-screens, audio enhancements, and even new menu dishes have been added to illustrate the importance of the occasion, and satisfy the needs of the fans of Diego Maradona’s team.

“From now on, we’re open at 7 a.m. with breakfast. We’ve added two new TV screens, we have 6 TV sets, we’ve extended our hours, we are ready to go!”

The streets are still filled with flags commemorating Argentina’s bicentennial, and they will remain up, in hopes they will be celebrating the World Cup as well. Argentinian fans are counting on the team scores to keep their spirits high.

아르헨티나 사람들은 월드컵이라면 사족을 못 씁니다. 월드컵이 사람들의 기분을 좌지우지할 뿐만 아니라, 정치인들은 국가대표팀의 성적이 내년 총선 결과에 영향을 끼칠 것으로 전망하고 있습니다.

월드컵 모임은 철저하게 준비되고 있습니다.

“직장에도 TV가 한 대 있어서 국가대표팀 경기와 다른 주요 팀 경기를 볼 수 있습니다.”

“최대한 이 기분을 만끽해 보려고요. 전 아르헨티나가 우승할 것이라고 믿습니다.”

“친구들하고 함께 볼 겁니다. 아마 친구들 애인들도 함께 와 경기를 관람할 것이고요. 물론 전 친구들하고 함께 볼 겁니다.”

아르헨티나의 광적인 축구 사랑은 너무 잘 알려져 있습니다. 국가대표팀 경기는 물론, 나머지 경기에도 많은 사람들의 관심이 쏠립니다. 인테리어도 바꾸고, TV도 한 단계 업그레이드했습니다. 대형 스크린으로 바꾸고 음향 시설도 개선되었습니다. 또한 새로운 메뉴도 추가되었습니다. 오로지 디에고 마라도나 팀 팬들의 요구 사항을 충족시키기 위한 이러한 일련의 조치들은 월드컵의 중요성을 나타내 주는 단적인 예입니다.

“이제부터 저희는 아침 7시에 문을 열어 아침식사를 제공합니다. TV 스크린 두 대를 새로 들여와 총 6대의 TV가 있고, 영업 시간도 연장했습니다. 이제 만반의 준비가 다 되었습니다.”

거리는 아르헨티나 200주년을 기념하는 깃발들로 여전히 가득 차 있지만, 월드컵 기념이라는 명목으로 아직 철거되지 않고 있습니다. 아르헨티나 팬들은 팀 성적이 고양된 분위기를 계속 유지할 것으로 믿고 있습니다.
