At Cal State East Bay in Hayward, they’re ready for commencement exercises. In her dorm room, so is 85-year-old Ida Cotton; she just earned a Master’s degree:

“I have always been interested in knowing a little bit more.”

Ida’s thesis is mostly her life story. Born to sharecroppers in the deep South, a child during the Great Depression.

“I am telling you, those were the hardest and roughest days. It taught all of us a good lesson.”

After a career as a hotel cook, she began college in her late 70’s, the last three years here at Cal State.

“Man, she’s just an awesome individual. Like, every time we pass by, she’s always saying ‘Hi’, always willing to lend a hand to anybody.”

“Her inspiration is amazing, but also the fact that she has so much drive ? to achieve a Master’s degree at 85.”

While dorm-mates were moving back with families and tossing out their junk, Miss Ida faces a crisis.

“She’s without a place to live.”

The university says it’s desperately seeking nearby affordable housing for her, and is asking the public for help.

Like other graduates, Ida hopes to get a job. And to those who might wonder who’d hire a visually- and hearing-impaired 85-year-old:

“Nothing wrong with my brain, Mister, and my mouth either. I am going to get a job, want to bet?”

칼 스테이트 이스트베이가 졸업식 준비에 한창입니다. 85세의 이다 코튼 역시 자신의 기숙사 방에서 졸업식 준비에 여념이 없습니다. 그녀는 얼마 전에 석사 학위를 받았습니다.

“조금씩 더 알아 가는 데 관심이 많았습니다.”

이다의 논문은 대개 자신의 인생 이야기입니다. 남부 시골의 소작농의 딸로 태어난 그녀는 어린 시절에 대공황을 겪었습니다.

“가장 어렵고 힘들었던 시기라고 말할 수 있죠. 우리 모두에게 좋은 교훈을 보여준 셈입니다.”

호텔 요리사 직업을 그만 두고 그녀는 70대 후반에 대학 공부를 시작했습니다. 이곳 칼 스테이트에서는 벌써 3년째 수학 중입니다.

“정말 놀라운 분입니다. 어떠냐 하면요. 우리가 지나갈 때마다 항상 ‘안녕’하고 인사를 하고 누구든 도움을 주려고 애를 씁니다.”

“놀라운 영감을 지닌 분이고, 85세에 석사를 따낼 정도로 엄청난 에너지를 가지신 분입니다.”

기숙사 동기들은 가족들과 함께 이사를 하고 잡동사니들을 버리고 있는 반면, 이다는 위기를 맞았습니다.

“그녀는 거처가 없습니다.”

대학 측은 그녀가 감당할 수 있는 가까운 거처를 찾고 있고, 공개적으로 도움을 요청하고 있습니다.

다른 졸업생들과 마찬가지로, 이다 씨도 일자리를 찾기를 바랍니다. 눈도 침침하고 듣는 데도 어려움이 있는 85세의 노인이 과연 직업을 얻을 수 있을까 의구심을 갖는 분이 있다면,

“머리는 아무 문제가 없답니다. 말하는 데도 그렇고요. 저는 취업을 할 겁니다. 내기 할래요?”
