BP’s Board of Directors held a meeting here in its global headquarters in central London. Some of the members, including the Chairman, were here; others dialed in, in a teleconference.

Of course, there are a number of issues for the Board to deal with, Number 1 being: Should the company set up a fund - some say up to $20 billion to go into this fund - to be administered by a 3rd party, to deal with many of the economic and environmental claims that are coming in from the Gulf of Mexico.

The second issue, of course, is dividends: A lot of pressure coming from Washington for BP to suspend its very lucrative quarterly dividends. The reason this has a big impact on the share price is many pension funds here in the UK and the US rely on that quarterly dividend, and there’s a lot of talk that maybe they shouldn’t be giving out that money - instead, using that money to help pay for all the environmental damage in the Gulf.

Now, BP says to date, the whole spill has cost it less than $2 billion. However, many analysts think it could go much, much higher - some say even as high as $40 billion. And BP continues to say that it has plenty of money and resources to deal with it. Still, some would like to see it cut this dividend, or suspend it, or put it into an escrow account.

A lot more will be known about this later this week, when the Chairman and the CEO, Tony Hayward, are in Washington and meet with President Obama.

두 번째 안건은 물론 배당 문제입니다. 미국 정부는 BP에 매우 두둑한 분기 배당을 일시 중단하라는 상당한 압력을 행사하고 있는데요. 이 배당이 주가에 상당한 영향을 끼치는 이유가 이곳 영국과 미국에 위치한 수많은 연금 펀드가 이 분기 배당에 목을 매고 있기 때문입니다. 그리고 이 돈을 배당해서는 안 되고 대신 이 돈으로 멕시코만의 모든 환경 피해를 복구하자는 말들이 나오고 있습니다.

이제 BP는 지금까지 나온 모든 유출로 20억 달러 상당의 비용이 들었다고 주장합니다. 그렇지만 그 비용은 훨씬 더 많이 소요될 것으로 분석되고 있고, 일부는 최대 400억 달러까지 추산하고 있습니다. 그리고 BP는 이 피해를 처리할 상당한 자금과 자원을 확보하고 있다고 합니다. 그렇더라도 이 배당금을 줄이거나, 중단하거나, 이를 에스크로 펀드에 넣어 두자는 주장이 제기되고 있습니다.
